I am planning on ferries from Dublin to Holyhead and Hull to Rotterdam. What I am interested in is if anybody has good suggestions for a nice quiet route once on mainland Europe. Basically I was thinking of heading due East, from Holland until I would pick up the Elbe river and then follow it upstream to Prague. I would appreciate any views or suggestion. I am planning on doing approx 120 - 150 km per day, travelling fairly light and staying in hotels or B&B. Regards Bill |

As this is an extremly long ride and you dont say how long you have got time wise. |

I have friends in Holland and that was my main reason for choosing Holland, plus having lived there for quite some time I know I can cover a decent distance on the purpose built cycle paths. However at this stage I have not decided definitely on a route and welcome submissions. I am not stuck for time so I aim to just cover approx the same distance each day. Looking at the route on google maps Rotterdam is a considerable bit further east than say Calais or say Oostende so the distance is actually a bit shorter. However I am interested in suggestions as cycling through some new areas is also worthwhile. Regards Bill |

Last week I completed Leg 1 - Glencolmcille, Co. Donegal, Ireland to Uppermill, near Manchester. This Sunday coming - May 6th I will recommence and Leg 2 is Uppermill to Hull and then Europort to Prague. I have looked at various routes and as I want to visit friends in Holland I am basically going off route for a while. There is very little info on Eurovelo Route 4 and I am not into GPS technology (yet!!). The easiest route thus for me is Eurovelo Route 2 ( known as the Galway - Moscow route), which I will rejoin close to the German border at Groenlo. I will follow this well marked and well known route due East until I hit the River Elbe (near Wittenberg ). Then I will follow Eurovelo Route 7 south to Prague ( known as the Sun route - North cape to Malta ) - the route more or less follows the river Elbe upstream. The route names can be confusing as in Holland the route east is known as LF4 ( LF stands for long distance cycle routes )- however I speak Dutch so no issues there. In Germany it is known as Europaradweg R1. The normal start of LF4 (Eurovelo route 2) is a very short distance north of the Europort Ferry Terminal (approx 48 km ) on the outskirts of Den Haag and very easy to pick up. I will arrive in Holland on May 8th and need to be in Prague on May 18th - birthday party to attend!!.I am flying home. I can give an update upon my return. Regards Bill |
