Hi, i'm looking for some advice. Me and a group of about 7 or 8 friends want to cycle through France this summer, we're looking to spend about a week or 10 days doing this and we can travel at least 80Km a day.
We just need help with route planning, we were hoping to do a large loop starting and ending in Le Havre (prefferably near the ferry port), and hopefully travelling through outskirt areas of Paris (as I have been warned about cycling in the capital?) and if possible going through some coastal towns. We all have road-racing bikes so we can't do offroad. So I was wandering if anyone had a big cycle route as explained of between like 500 and 800km?
And we were also unsure about where to stay at night, because we were thinking of camping but I am unsure where any campsites are or if not camping then we are unsure where any Youth Hostels are (we want to keep the costs LOW) and we were also wondering if it's legal to just pitch up anywhere??
Thanks for any help that can be given

Tom

Hi Tom, Just read your note and it seems like a great idea. Am not sure about just putting up a tent but I do know that there are an awful lot of caravan parks around the place and I imagine that it is about €10 a night or so. We live in the Charente region just outside a village called Aigre. This is about 1 hours drive from Cognac/Bordeaux and in all the wine valleys. The area is knows as the Bread basket of France. It is flat to undulating but no very high mountains as there are in other areas. It is about an hour from La Rochelle an area very beautiful and on the coast, but inland there are beautiful rivers and lakes that are also worth investigating. To keep prices low Gites can be hired in the off peak season (we should know we have some!) but there are also B&B (known as Chambre D'Hotes and as you said camping) I hope you manage to find what you want. If I can be of any help (I am Irish, Dublin actually, though family are from all over) do not hesitate to contact me at the following mail : aesheridan2002@yahoo.co.uk
Best of luck with your plans.

Regards,

Ann
